Compensatory Time Procedures for UCPEA Employees in Exempt Positions

The UCPEA collective bargaining agreement which became effective July 1, 2007 includes new language regarding compensatory time for exempt employees. The contract reads:

“Whenever an exempt employee is required to work extraordinary hours with the prior approval of a supervisor outside the bargaining unit, compensatory time shall be afforded. When compensatory time is afforded it shall be equivalent to the extraordinary hours worked. The following procedures shall be followed:

  1. A standard approval form shall be jointly completed by the employee and the first manager (or designee) outside the bargaining unit specifying the reason for the requirement and indicating the prior approval.
  2. All compensatory time must be recorded on the employee’s leave record as it is earned [and used].
  3. Each department shall track compensatory time balances.
  4. All time must be utilized within three years of being earned at times mutually agreeable to the employee and the supervisor.”

The new contract further states that if an exempt employee’s accumulation of compensatory time “exceeds a balance of 140 hours, management may opt to pay for the time over 100 hours up to a maximum of 40 hours at a time.”

Two Required Forms:

Questions regarding the compensatory time policy should be directed to Keith Hood, (860) 486-8083. Questions regarding these procedures should be directed to Stephanie Parker, (860) 486-8737.
